Two bits of science

As usual, two photonics-related news extracted from Slashdot.org:

Code for Unbreakable Quantum Encryption

At the NIST, they have generated raw code for quantum encryption at a rate of more than 4 million bits per second over 1 km of optical fiber.

Paint-on laser brings optical computing closer

A research group from Toronto have been developing a laser by painting with "olive oil" (;P) a thin tube of glass with a solution of quantum dots. They say it's low cost and very flexible. Do you think we will be able in the near future to dress our salads with quantum dots too?
